This makes the caterpillar a symbol of the journey itself rather than reaching the destination. Elsewhere, the caterpillar is literally addressed as a creature of movement from larva stage to moth a transformation process that is a journey. This decision is made on the basis of it being used for a journey. The narrator decides that Sani's Jeep is a caterpillar. Without giving too much away, this symbolism of moths is very apt for the character narrating the story.
